Common Milkweed
Asclepias syriaca - Common milkweed
Host plant for the caterpillars of the Monarch butterfly and the Milkweed Tussock moth. Blooms from June through August and supports a variety of native insects, including milkweed beetles and milkweed bugs. Flowers are a dusty purple and fragrant. Milkweed seeds spread fairly easily and can be considered a "weed" in some areas. The plant will also spread through rhizomes and can crowd small gardens. The plant can be grown in part shade but may not flower as readily as it does in sunny spots.
